Christmas Creations
I've also been doing some sewing projects for Christmas gifts. I love the feeling of creating gifts for other people. What a wonderful time of year to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. I love the joy the season brings as we think of others and focus on those things we are grateful for.

Getting back into it
The first day of school was simply a nutty day. Trying to figure out where, how, and when to pick up and drop off the kids from school and Hudson starting tiny tots for his first time. Now carpools are running smoothly, and I am working on having a healthy snack ready for when the kids get home (today was zucchini bread, about 1/2 healthy 1/2 yummy!). I also try to have at least 1/2 of dinner prepared so I can sit and focus on homework with the kids.
It is absolutely strange to me that for 3 hours on Tues and Thursday I only have one child with me. Funny how when I had my first child I felt so tied down with a toddler, but now with ONLY 1 toddler to deal with I feel like I can conquer anything. My hardest thing is deciding what wonderful thing I want to do with those 3 magical hours. Should I workout, shop, clean the house, prepare meals, craft, visit teach, work on church stuff, just relax, or ....... the list can go on forever!
I have a lot of figuring out to do still. Funny how each new year brings on so many changes. How long is a routine really a routine? With children always growing, life is always changing and priorities change too.
So, my job this next couple weeks is to figure out what my best routine is, so my family's days can flow calmly and smoothly. Have you picked up any new routines with this new school year? Anything working great for you?

I made it!
How are you spending your summer days? Enjoying time with the kids and family?
How are you finding a way to fit in exercise and healthy eating with all the vacations and time with the children?
If you are struggling: try setting a goal to improve a little at a time. It can be something simple, like only eating dessert 2 times a week instead of 5 ;) Or fitting in at least 2 days of exercise a week. Make a small goal and set your mind to it. Good luck! Please share.

Exercising while on vacations
During my week vacation I made it to 1 kickboxing class at the local 24 hour fitness, Ran/did elliptical twice for about 40 minutes and combined that with a few weights, and did a P90X video with my hubby and bro in law. So, on a week vacation I fit in 4 workouts! Its really amazing how when you make something a priority you really can fit it in. Instead of feeling horrible when I came back from vacation, I felt great!
So....Survival tips for vacations,
#1 Make exercise a priority
#2 Surround yourself with people who enjoy exercise or be the motivator! (Everyone will thank you later)
#3 Enjoy the relaxation but do not over indulge in the food.
Good Luck with your summer vacationing!!!

Saving money
I would not call myself an extreme couponer~as I only purchase one paper per week and shop only maybe twice a week, but still its been fun and exciting to see those savings.
For example: Last week one of my best transactions(its often best to do multiple transactions at one store), I scored 2 gallons of milk, 2 dino gogurts, a danimals drink 6 pack, and yogurt 6 pack for.....
I stuck to stuff that we buy on a normal basis so I feel like I'm only buying things I normally would. The fiberone bars alone would have cost me more than that amount had I bought them at Walmart where I usually shop, so I figure everything else on the counter is just bonus and free. My pantry is starting to burst out the seams and I've spent less in the last month in grocery shopping than I do on a normal month. Its amazing!!!!

Balancing the changes
My latest concerns with staying healthy both have to do with Balancing the Changes...
FIRST~
How do I fit in exercise with all 4 kids home from school and so many fun vacations planned? There is no way I am paying $12 each time I go to the gym so my kids can be babysat there or paying the $80 monthy fee it would cost to have them all enrolled in the unlimited babysitting! I've gotta figure out a way to fit it in, so I may be trying to do a few laps at the pool or do some extra squats while I fix meals. Should be interesting :)
SECOND~
My bad knee is starting to bother me a bit. If you don't know, I tore my ACL completely my senior year of high school. I walked on it for a year instead of having the surgery right away (this was the only way I was going to be able to go to the college of choice). So, I ruined a lot of cartlidge along the way. The doctor told me I would never be able to run again. I feel blessed that I can do as much as I can exercise wise. Recently I wanted to slim down, so I've been taking lots of kickboxing and other cardio type classes (which totally work)~ I think this is starting to irritate my knee a bit. So, that is my other dilema, how to I choose between staying fit and putting too much strain on my knee.
So, those are my thoughts for the day. I know I need to take care of my body, and I want to, but as a mom of 4 it isn't always easy. I'm going to work on finding a new balance for the next 2 months and figure this out.

Thoughts on Venting
SOMETIMES I JUST WANNA.....
*kick and scream like a kid
*splat, I AM GOING CRRRRAAAAZZZZZZZZZY and I'm so frustrated all over facebook
*call up the subpoena clerk and explain to them that my husband would appreciate more than 2 1/2 hours of sleep a night and scream to them about how I would love to see my husband at least every other day!!!
There are a few ways I deal with hard days. Most hard days I just grab my journal and write and sometimes I cry (a girl needs a cry every once in a while right?). As I write I try to find the positive in what is going on. I think of how this trial of loneliness and exhaustion is strengthening me. I think of who I may be able to relate to in the future because of this hard time I am going through. A few times I have called up a listening ear such as my mother, sister, or good friend. Other times I think of others who I can do service for to get my mind off of myself (some of those who live close by are often recipients of baked goods on my really hard days). For some reason baking with my kids and delivering cookies, or bread to a friend make me feel so much better (then eating a cookie afterward helps too :)
HERE'S WHERE YOU COME IN!
HOW DO YOU VENT? DO YOU THINK ITS A HEALTHY THING TO VENT? DON'T WE ALL GET ANGRY SOMETIMES? IF YOU'VE BEEN ON FACEBOOK LATELY YOU PROBABLY KNOW LOTS OF PEOPLE WHO GO AHEAD AND PUT ALL THEIR COMPLAINTS OUT THERE EVERYDAY FOR EVERYONE TO SEE. HOW DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL HEARING ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE'S ISSUES CONSTANTLY. DO YOU THINK VENTING SHOULD BE PERSONAL OR IS IT FINE TO VENT PUBLICLY? (I'm not sure how everyone feels on this issue, so please do share).

Inspiration from Jennie
"My name is Jennie Burke and in January I took Joanna's challenge on to get more fit and healthy. I started out walking 5 days a week for about 30 minutes. Over the course of the 4 weeks I was able to start jogging about 2.5 miles in the 30 minutes. After the 4 weeks was over I continued to jog/slow run about 3 times a week. Well in early March an opportunity came up for me to run in the Southern California Ragnar Relay. Ragnar Relays are an overnight race where you and 11 of your team mates run for 200 plus miles. My husband and sister in law had run one previously and their new team needed a runner and they asked me to join. I was only running about 2 to 3 miles so taking on something like this was really overwhelming for me. But I used Joanna's positive thinking and decided to join. So in April I ran 12.5 miles of the 200.9 mile race. From January to April I lost 35 pounds. It was incredible, the way I pushed my body and did things I didn't think I could do was so amazing. The challenge really changed my life for the better. I am still not as healthy as I would like to be I have a lot more weight to lose but I am on the right path and I am definitely more active than I have been since high school. Which really feels amazing. We have signed up to run another Ragnar in September which is so exciting and will help keep me motivated. Trust me I am living proof that if you set your mind to something you can definitely do it no matter what the stands in the way. "
Thank you so much Jennie for being an inspiration. We all start at different points. I love that you took on something challenging and were able to share that experience with your husband. Good luck in your continued goals toward health and fitness. Please share with us again~ we'd love to have an update again in a few months!

Zumba and Treadmill
Zumba (50 minutes)- 300 calories
Treadmill (17 minutes running)- 170 calories. Thought I'd note that even after putting in my age and weight into the treadmill the calories said that I had burned 250 calories, so my watch proved I burn less than the "average" person. Keep that in mind when you are using the machines. Its all based on averages, so everyone's body is a little different. If you are trying to be exact on your calorie intake/exercise than you may want to get something more accurate instead of counting on the averages being correct for your body.
I'm going to have the hit the gym hard next week after all the celebrating we've been doing. Since Thursday its been fun around here celebrating my hubby's 31st birthday and enjoying time with family this Memorial day weekend. It will continue until Monday~then the next couple weeks I will work on whipping myself back into shape to burn off all the yummy food and dessert that I've been eating. YIKES! I may need some extra motivation, who's with me?

Fun with counting :)
So far I've logged in 4 of my normal morning workoutsand one day out with the kids and here are the results:
24 Lift (50 minute weight class) 250 calories
I was a little disappointed at first, but strengthening those muscles is just as important as the calorie burn. A balance of weights and cardio is important to being healthy.
Turbo Kick (I was 10 minutes late and had to leave once to change a poopy diaper), so about a 40 minute workout burned 375 calories~ pretty good eh?
Turbo Kick (full class) 450 calorie~ even better!
Step Class (full class) 385 calories
3 hours at the Zoo- 690 calories This was at the L.A. zoo pushing a double stroller up the hilly pathway, picking up kids, and all the other stuff that goes with a day at the zoo with 2 kids :)
Its fun seeing the #s and how the classes compare to just running on the treadmill. I love exercising. I see the results in the mirror, and also in the way I feel. Anything that makes me feel better about myself makes for a good mother's day present. Good job to my hubby for a great gift!

That "SOMETHING"
I've just always wanted that special connection and love that in my relationships that I just couldn't figure out how to explain or ask for. For me its just that "SOMETHING" that I just haven't been able to put my finger on. At times I would be frustrated and tell my spouse that I was feeling a certain way, but I had no way of explaining what he could do to help me feel better. I've had this communication barrier for years, that is until I started digging into a new book that my sister recommended to me called the 5 LOVE LANGUAGES.
This book has been taking me on the quest to figure out what makes me feel satisfied and complete in my relationships with others. It also helps me be able to figure out how to understand what others need in their relationships. I feel like its helped me to be a better wife, friend, and mother. Its been so fun and exciting testing the different things out on my relationships and seeing how the different techniques work on different people. I'm not finished yet, but I've pretty much figured out my own "love language." I've now been able to communicate my needs to my husband in a simple way that he understands, and it has taken our relationship to a new level of understanding, connection, and given me that "SOMETHING" that I just couldn't figure out before. I'm still working on pinpointing his "love language." He agreed to sit down and read through a few parts with me, so that is on my to do list :)
If you are searching for that "SOMETHING" that you find is missing in your relationships then pick up the book and read it individually or with your partner. I guarantee it can bring you joy and fulfillment if you put it to practice.
Here is a basic outline of the 5 languages~ What you need to do it pinpoint your language and then communicate that need to your spouse. Also, pinpoint their language and fulfill that need for them. Fill their "love tank" and it will make a huge difference in your relationship.
Words of Affirmation
Actions don’t always speak louder than words. If this is your love language, unsolicited compliments mean the world to you. Hearing the words, “I love you,” are important—hearing the reasons behind that love sends your spirits skyward. Insults can leave you shattered and are not easily forgotten.
Quality Time
In the vernacular of Quality Time, nothing says, “I love you,” like full, undivided attention. Being there for this type of person is critical, but really being there—with the TV off, fork and knife down, and all chores and tasks on standby—makes your significant other feel truly special and loved. Distractions, postponed dates, or the failure to listen can be especially hurtful.
Receiving Gifts
Don’t mistake this love language for materialism; the receiver of gifts thrives on the love, thoughtfulness, and effort behind the gift. If you speak this language, the perfect gift or gesture shows that you are known, you are cared for, and you are prized above whatever was sacrificed to bring the gift to you. A missed birthday, anniversary, or a hasty, thoughtless gift would be disastrous—so would the absence of everyday gestures.
Acts of Service
Can vacuuming the floors really be an expression of love? Absolutely! Anything you do to ease the burden of responsibilities weighing on an “Acts of Service” person will speak volumes. The words he or she most want to hear: “Let me do that for you.” Laziness, broken commitments, and making more work for them tell speakers of this language their feelings don’t matter.
Physical Touch
This language isn’t all about the bedroom. A person whose primary language is Physical Touch is, not surprisingly, very touchy. Hugs, pats on the back, holding hands, and thoughtful touches on the arm, shoulder, or face—they can all be ways to show excitement, concern, care, and love. Physical presence and accessibility are crucial, while neglect or abuse can be unforgivable and destructive.

Rainy Day Blues
Not sure how you women who live in places where you are stuck indoors all day due to the weather live! This morning I was able to get out and go to the gym, but our weekly trip to the park was a no go due to the drizzle. Now that I'm home I just wanna be lazy, put the kids in front of the tube, and sit down and snack on yummy treats and do nothing at all. If this was a daily occurance it would not be so pretty to look at this body of mine. I would be overweight for sure, and not sure if I would be as positive as I generally try to be.
Is it just because I was bred to be a California girl? Do some women/mother's enjoy being indoor all day? Maybe that's why people in other states need huge homes with gigantic basements. When I was up at Ricks college in the freezing weather I put on the poundage quick! It was no pretty site (you can ask my hubby who would be glad to share with you that I had chipmunk cheeks after spending the year there).
Random post today, but that's what it on my mind. Until next time, I'll be hoping for my California weather to return soon.

Sleep and Weight Loss
A mother's life and sleep. At park days with other new mommies the questions about sleep always pop up. Is your child a good sleeper? What kind of sleep routine do you have them on? Etc... Another common subject is about weight. How did you lose that baby weight so fast? How do I get my waistline to go down? Or, I just can't seem to lose that last 5-10 lbs no matter what I do!
In the last few months I've been focusing on how to become healthier in several areas. Two of my main goals have been to get to sleep earlier and to have a continuous exercise routine. Funny, I've never thought of these two as related. I just thought getting more sleep would help me be less of a grouch each morning (which it does most mornings :).
As I stepped on the scale a few mornings ago I thought, how in the world is my weight still going down? I haven't changed anything in my eating pattern or exercise routine to cause that amount of calorie difference. Then I thought, the only thing in my daily routine that I have changed is my sleep pattern. So I wondered, could this "earlier to sleep, earlier to rise" sleep change be effecting my weight loss?
After some research online I found that my prediction is likely to be correct. No wonder it is so hard to lose those last 5-10 pounds once children enter your life! Sleep is hard to come by in those first months. Sometimes we must sacrifice time to ourselves in the evening and just shut our eyes.
My challenge to you mommies is to try to fit a little more sleep into your night. I know its not easy (especially if you have new babies or teenagers). Give it a try and let me know if you see the same effects I have seen in the last 2 months. If nothing else, maybe you will be a little slower to snap at your hubbies or children in the morning.
Happy ZZZZZZZZZZZZZs!!!!

Women's Conference
What's interesting about the trip is that the night before I left I was up all night with my 3 year old while he was sick, and I actually didn't feel too well when I headed out. I was determined and prayed that I would have a great time, and it worked :) Despite calls from home hearing from my sick husband, and hearing that even my baby was sick I was able to focus on the positive and take in the experience. Along the way we even encountered problems with my car! As the snow fell and my car wouldn't start I laughed and stayed positive. I was surrounded by positive people, and that really made all the difference. From this experience it was reaffirmed to me that being around people who are positive helps me to be the same way.
If you are feeling in the dumps and those around you are feeding your fuel of negativity and making it worse~stay clear! Surround yourself with positiveness and make an extra effort to be that person who you would want to be around. It can truly change your life if you stick with it. I have seen myself and felt myself become a different person in the last 2 years or so, and I believe that surrounding myself with positive people has truly been the key.
Have a great day.

Creativity~give it a try
For inspiration, the following are excerpts from a talk from a leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and goes perfectly with my challenge for the next couple weeks~
TO CREATE SOMETHING!!!! It can be anything. Please share your creation with us :)
"The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul. No matter our talents, education, backgrounds, or abilities, we each have an inherent wish to create something that did not exist before.
Everyone can create. You don’t need money, position, or influence in order to create something of substance or beauty.
Creation brings deep satisfaction and fulfillment. We develop ourselves and others when we take unorganized matter into our hands and mold it into something of beauty
You may think you don’t have talents, but that is a false assumption, for we all have talents and gifts, every one of us. Creation means bringing into existence something that did not exist before—colorful gardens, harmonious homes, family memories, flowing laughter.
What you create doesn’t have to be perfect. So what if the eggs are greasy or the toast is burned? Don’t let fear of failure discourage you. Don’t let the voice of critics paralyze you—whether that voice comes from the outside or the inside.
The more you trust and rely upon the Spirit, the greater your capacity to create. That is your opportunity in this life and your destiny in the life to come. Sisters, trust and rely on the Spirit. As you take the normal opportunities of your daily life and create something of beauty and helpfulness, you improve not only the world around you but also the world within you."
Here are a few of my latest creations.
Easter Chick Cupcakes (found the idea online and recreated it)
My/my friend Andrea's first fondant cake, and the cute little girl was partially my creation too :)

The Healing Medicine
When monday rolled around, I had all 4 kiddos home (spring break), and a sick hubby to take care of. We also have lots of fun plans on the calendar for the entire week, so I knew I wouldn't be making it to the gym much. I just didn't feel good because I hadn't gotten that dose of exercise my body is used to and just craves now. So, instead of making it to our planned parkday right on time I decided to hit the gym hard and I feel sooooo much better!
Exercise to me is a type of healing medicine that only costs time~so worth it!!! Makes my mind more clear, my body healthier, my attitude positive, and helps me enjoy the moments with my family so much more.
So, next time you are having a bad day think about what you are needing, perhaps your answer will be the same as mine was today :)

Ups and downs of Motherhood
Step #1: I started by emptying out all the clothes that don't fit~ including a few maternity pieces that were missed, some tops I bought simply for nursing, and lots of older pants and shorts that are just huge on me. I found some that I used to wear back in college~ so disturbing! Why was I holding onto this stuff? I have the pictures that prove I gained the freshman 15, (so maybe it was 20)~ why do I need the pants? If you've lost some weight and don't want to go back to that size ever, then get rid of the clothes!!! (If you are still having children then put it away in a box, don't keep them in your closet).
Step #2: Once I rid of those I went onto those things I haven't worn in years and that are way outdated and I would never want to be caught dead wearing them! Seriously, I don't plan on being the mom that wears the same dress in family pics 15 years later by accident!
Step #3: Next, I went onto a few shirts that have mommy stains and I never wear because of the stain I was never able to get off. Sad, some of them were only worn once or twice, but that's what happens when we are mom's right? The price we pay :)
After all the sifting and organizing my closet looks much better and I can find the things that I like to wear much quicker. It feels good to walk into a clean organized space where I have only those items I enjoy wearing and not the ones that remind me of times when I was unhappy with my body image. It felt great! So if you haven't cleaned out that closet in a while, give it a whirl. Good luck!

Calendar in control?
I decided to read a few talks from leaders of my church and a couple things hit me. Here are a few of the words from Dieter F. Uchtdorf~
"Let’s be honest; it’s rather easy to be busy. We all can think up a list of tasks that will overwhelm our schedules. Some might even think that their self-worth depends on the length of their to-do list. They flood the open spaces in their time with lists of meetings and minutia—even during times of stress and fatigue. Because they unnecessarily complicate their lives, they often feel increased frustration, diminished joy, and too little sense of meaning in their lives.
It is said that any virtue when taken to an extreme can become a vice. Over scheduling our days would certainly qualify for this. There comes a point where milestones can become millstones and ambitions, albatrosses around our necks.
There is a beauty and clarity that comes from simplicity that we sometimes do not appreciate in our thirst for intricate solutions. Leonardo da Vinci is quoted as saying that “simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” Let us simplify our lives a little. Let us make the changes necessary to refocus our lives on the sublime beauty of the simple, humble path of Christian discipleship—the path that leads always toward a life of meaning, gladness, and peace. "
I decided to take these words to heart, so instead of complaining about my busy life as a mother of 4, I decided it was time to take hold of my life and that of my children as well. Kirk and I decided to fore go the baseball season that we considered signing Bruin up for and sticking to some more simple activities that take up less time and are more flexible with our schedule. We are loving that our evenings are more open to spend as a family and enjoy some relaxing moments together. We are also able to visit with family and friends more often. Its also been helping me feel peace in my life. I feel blessed to have time to do those things that matter most.
Challenge: Try to cut back on the scheduled events on your calendar. Find one night a week that you can spend just doing something together as a family. Enjoy time with your husband, children, parents, or with whoever is most important in your life.

Sorry!
Two great things have happened this week that I want to share.
#1 Has to do with exercise. I have been continuing to go to the gym, and I got a friend to join me this week which was really fun and exciting (thanks Linds)! Also, on Tuesday before our normal "park day" my friend and I went to the park an hour early and worked out while our kids played. When all the other fun gals got there we explained why we were sweaty and in our work out clothes- they were sad they missed the exercise, so we decided to do an exercise/park day today and it went really well. Instead of sitting around munching on our kids goldfish and other miscellaneous crackers we worked our booties off~ it was awesome. Sounds like its a new weekly routine, so I'm really excited about it! Moral of the story, share a workout with a friend~it makes it so much more fun and enjoyable!
#2 I have a fun lunch date set up with a family member who I have let slide through the cracks somehow and never really gotten to know much about. I'm looking forward to it :) I hope we can become better friends and understand eachother a little better.
So, that's my weekly wrap up. What good things have you made happen this week?

Do you feel it? Added Challenge
I also thought about the blessings I have in my life. I felt reconnected to God as well and felt his presence in my life. I know that God can direct us if we take the time to listen. As I pondered I realized that in my last post where I wrote about my trip to San Diego and visiting my Grandmother and cousins, God had directed me there. It was a very impromptu trip, which usually I am more of a planner, and in the end there was a distinct purpose for me being there. I really believe that it was no coincidence, and that God had a hand in it.
I have been thinking about other ideas for this weeks challenge. Some good ones popped into my mind, but I still have a few unfinished things that have to do with last week's challenge. I'm hoping I'm not the only one, so I want to challenge you again to focus your efforts this week again toward those things on your personal "importance" list and add one more part to it.
Challenge: Write a note or have lunch with someone in your life who you care about and would like to develop a closer relationship with. I already have someone on my mind, so I'm hoping I can set up something very soon.

What is dear to your heart?
I had planned on a different challenge, but for this week my challenge is this.
**Write a list of the things that you hold dearest to your heart. If one of those things is something you have been neglecting then rededicate yourself and make a change**
For example:
If its God and you haven't been praying to him then take a moment a few times a day and thank him and ask for forgiveness.
If its your family and you haven't take the time to tell or show them lately that you love them, then do it! If there is someone in your family who you need to get in contact with and let go of hurt feelings, then do it!
If its your health and you have been neglecting to take care of your body, then take action to exercise or improve your eating habits.
I think you get the point. Reach down deep and don't be afraid to make changes. Life is fragile and you never know what challenges will come your way. Make changes now so you have no regrets.

Laundry Challenge
I know some of you already had your laundry routine all figured out, high fives to you. I think my years of completing my education put me a little behind on some of these things, so please forgive me if some of these challenges are things you have already mastered in the last few years! Also, I applaud those of you who have learned to manage being a working mom and take care of your children and home~I'm not sure of how you do that! My house looked like an absolute bomb the times that I was attending classes to finish my degree, and home cooked meals were a rare finding (mostly lots of frozen foods).
Next week's challenge should be posted by tomorrow, so keep your eyes peeled.
Hints: Its something I've been working on for the last few months, and when I do it my children generally get a much happier mommy and I am able to get so much more accomplished. Its something we all want and need. Finally, its something we are often deprived of as mothers~ especially mommies with very young children and teenagers :)

Inspired by a friend of mine :) Thanks Sarah!
Inspired me to have you mommies out there give it a try~if you are brave enough: today, throw away a toy of your kids that just annoys you to no end or causes fights between your children constantly. Maybe it'll make you a little more sane :)
I want to know if any of you do this!!! Please do share.

The never ending task
LAUNDRY!!!!!!
The dreaded word used to just make me cringe until I took a smart mom's advice and tried laundry day! I never liked the idea of taking a whole day out of my week to complete the task of laundry from start to finish, but I decided to try something new and this something new is a keeper for me. I decided on 2 days a week that would be designated as "laundry days," and those are the ONLY 2 DAYS A WEEK that I wash, dry, fold, and put away laundry! The other days I let it pile up and don't worry about washing. This doesn't mean that I can't go anywhere, but it does mean that every time I come home I have to rotate so its all gets through or it must wait until the next laundry day.
This week's challenge is to designate a day or 2 out of the week (depending on the volume of laundry and people in your home) to be "laundry day." If you already have a laundry day the the challenge this week is to try something new in your routine that others have suggested but you just haven't given it a chance. You may be surprised by what you find~ just as I was surprised to find my new love for "laundry days!"
Check her out!
Good luck to everyone who is continuing on their journey to a healthier lifestyle. I have heard from so many of you who have been motivated by this blog. Meet our winner!
Mid-challenge I decided to contact Subway to see if our blog could donate a prize to a person who was willing to share their story with us, and they agreed.
Subway was kind enough to donate $25 to our winner, and our winner is...........
CAROLINE!!!!!
Caroline's story was a little different than you would expect from this challenge, so I thought it would be a good one to share. Every one's lives are so different: some moms work/some are home, some have a gym pass/some do not, some have 1 child/ some have more than they can fit on one hand. I loved that Caroline shared her struggles, but didn't use that as an excuse and changed what she could. So here's her self-narrative of her 4 week challenge.
"My 4 week challenge was not what I had hoped it would be, but not a total loss either. Getting time to work out has proven near impossible.
My husband is rarely ever home to spell me from the kids (he works MINIMUM 12 hour days, usually more), I watch my grandmother with Alzheimer's/ dementia during the day so it's not like I can take grandma for a jog or have her watch the kids for 30 minutes so I can exercise. I can't afford a gym membership, and I've got a lovely hernia from having my 2 babies so I can only push my double stroller for limited amounts of time. I feel blocked at every angle.
Despite having road blocks, I did what I COULD do, which was fix my eating habits. I cut down the amount I was eating. I cut out white sugar and ended my love affair with hot chocolate. I added more salads and chose better snacks like almonds and raisins.
Even without exercising, I was still able to lose 8 lbs. over the last 4 weeks. It has shown me just how out of whack my eating was. I'm hoping to find some way that I can get exercise in, but I haven't come up with something that works yet. I'm not giving up though!"
Thank you to Caroline for sharing your story with us. I'm sure you have inspired many to overcome their challenges and do what they can personally to become a healthier mom for themselves and for their families.

Get Organized Challenge
Your home should be your favorite place in the world. But if your castle is starting to get you down because of the clutter and chaos, it is time to do something about it. Organizing your home can bring about a level of peace and tranquility.
When I find the time to organize a space it makes me feel so much more in control and able to handle the day to day things that come along. This weeks challenge is to organize one drawer, closet, shelf, or area that has been bothering you. Find that space that just drives you absolutely nuts and take control! If you don't have a lot of time then take on something small (like a small junk drawer, medicine cabinet, or even just the front of the refrigerator). If you have an entire afternoon then take on a bigger project like a closet, kid toy box, or your bathroom cabinets.
There are lots of resources online for organization tips. My personal tips are~ if you haven't used it in more than a year than toss it! My house is little, so I have to dejunk really often. I've finally learned to throw out or donate those things I'm not in need of any longer. There are lots of thrift stores and donation centers that will gladly take your usable items off your hands.
Good luck mamas!!!

Good and the Bad
Treats are my downfall for sure! I have learned that the easiest way for me to deal with treats is to avoid them completely~once I have a taste I have a hard time stopping at just 1, or maybe 2, or possibly 3! Why does the unhealthy stuff have to taste so dang good? Why can't a cinnamon roll be the recommended breakfast instead of oatmeal?
What's your favorite "healthy" treat that tastes too good to be considered "healthy," but it really is?

Hopefully you are looking and feeling a lot hotter than you did day 1 of the challenge! Looking forward to reading each of your individual stories. When Mom Ain't Happy....
The popular quote, "when mom ain't happy, ain't nobody happy" is so true!!! The mother most definitely sets the mood in her home! Raising children is a huge challenge, and at times I am so frustrated that I could just scream (in fact, I have at times). These are the times I wish I was just a kid again and could just throw a huge fit of kicking, screaming, throwing things, or just going and locking myself in a room for hours on end.
The hard thing is that as mothers we have to push on through the difficult moments and make things happen. Over the years I know my demeanor and attitude has changed so much for the positive. I used to just feel the anger inside of me bubbling, but somehow I have learned how to take control of it. I'm hoping I'm not the only one who's been in that place before. Mommies out there, am I alone?

Inspirational Story
Last July, 4 months after having her first baby she was size 18, 219 lbs, 5'10 in the left pictures, and she is now size 8, 167lbs! She lost 52 pounds in 6 months!!! She will tell you that she did not lose this weight by miraculous pills, gym memberships, expensive diets or trainers. She did work out videos, ran, ate less, and rewarded herself for small and large accomplishments. Her journey has not been easy, but it has been worth it!!! Check it out!!!
Recently Robynne rewarded herself with her cute new do that I think just looks so good on her with her hot new bod!!! For more information on Robynne's story check out her blog http://heavydutymama.blogspot.com/
May we continue to inspire one another and reach our goals. Remember, you can do it!!!! If you would like to share your story please let me know. We all should have taken pictures 3 weeks ago-you ready to show off your progress? 1 more week of the exercise challenge to go. If you've been struggling just start next week off right and continue to do better each day.
Thanks so much Robynne for sharing and inspiring :)

On Stage Advantage
Today I have the blessing (usually curse, but I'm thinking positively right?) of speaking for 13 minutes in front of a large congregation of people at my church. I prepared, pondered, prepared some more, stressed, then prayed, then went for it! I felt humbled and blessed to be able to speak on a topic I was passionate about. I spoke on teaching your children to stay on a righteous path.
My three points were: first, to take advantage of small teaching moments when they are ready to learn; second, work on developing a trusting personal relationship with each child; and third, stay consistent on having family prayer, scripture study, and reserving one night a week to have a "family night" where you can teach them, play with them, and have a little treat together in your home.
Usually I am super nervous and just think about all the things I will do wrong. Instead today I used this challenge of positive thinking and it worked wonders! As I sat up on the stage awaiting my turn, I decided to look around and see all the friendly faces and think of how they were just here to listen, learn, and support me. No one wanted me to do horribly. I also thought about the preparation I had done, and how I would just try to do my best. As I was up at the microphone I felt peaceful and was even able to tell some of the stories in my own words instead of just reading off the paper. It felt great! I'm not sure if anyone else felt the difference, but what mattered to me was the way I felt.
So, this week when you are encountering something challenging-rather than thinking about all the mistakes you will make, think of how smart you are and how well you will do. Good luck!

Positive Thought Challenge! 1 week!!!
This week in finding the time to take care of my body, I have found a nicer balance and surprisingly feel better about so many things. The body and mind are definitely connected as one of the inspirational quotes said this week, "Exercise is good for your mind, body, and soul." Exercise has helped me think more positively about myself, which has in turn made me be a better mother and wife.
This week I want to encourage each of you to continue to try to fit in that 5 days of exercise, and also with a new challenge! This week I want you to make an extra effort to be positive. Speak positively about yourself, those around you, and see how it makes you feel. Let your outlet to aggression be your exercise. Go take a kickboxing class or pull out that Taebo video instead of taking it out on those around you or pulling out that bowl of ice cream (you know we've all done that!).

Week # 1 comes to a close
I felt that the days I worked out I got more accomplished because I forced myself to start out the day early and on the right note. I'm feeling stronger and more motivated. I did step on the scale yesterday and I'm proud to say that some poundage is being shed. I'm hoping I don't goof it up this weekend with my poor weekend eating, which is easy to do with all the fun social stuff going on. My food journal has been helping me keep things in check and realizing where I am going wrong and having a harder time.
As week #1 is coming to an end, reflect: How did you do? Did you get in your 5 days of exercise? Do you feel stronger and more driven or do you feel more tired and run down. Did the food journal help you realize anything new or help drive you to have more healthy habits?
If you struggled then jump back on the train this week- remember that its never too late to start! Please share with us.

Weekend Tip: Don't be afraid to ask!
After a fun night playing games at Dave and Busters we really didn't want to go home yet, and dessert sounded good. So, we headed over to Denny's for a "little" treat. As I looked over the dessert menu I was trying to figure out what looked good and what might be the lowest calorie choice. Instead of making the guess I asked the waitress if she had a nutrition menu (since I've seen them at a few other places recently). She looked around in the back for a moment and came back with what saved me 370 calories!!!
Who knew the double scoop sundae w/ pecans and carmel would be 300, when the other dessert I was eyeing was 670!!!
So, moral of the story. This weekend when you are out with your hubby, boyfriend, family or friends, ask for the menu with the nutrition and you may save yourself big on calories and move yourself along faster to that goal of yours :) Who knows, maybe you won't be ordering that salad after all!!!

My mommy trouble zone!!! What is yours?
It seems to me that the lower abs are one of the toughest areas in the core to thoroughly get a great workout with. So, I thought I'd share some of my knowlege on this specific trouble zone. Before we get into some great exercises that will help you to hit the lower abs, it is very important that we talk about "spot reduction" and how this myth may have you on the wrong track.
Spot reduction refers to the idea that you tone and lose fat over a specific muscle group if you do tons of exercises focusing on that zone. For example, someone who wants to lose weight might think they need to do hundreds of crunches per day in order to do so. I assure you that this is not the case. If you want to lose fat in general, you are going to lose it with the right combination of diet, strength training, and interval training - a type of cardio that is specific for burning fat.
So doing a great ab workout feels great and will help to make your core stronger, but it will not make you lose fat around the midsection all by itself. Even so, it does feel awesome to work the abs. This is why I want you to try these two exercises below that are specific for working the lower abs.
Reverse crunches
1. Lie on your back with your knees in the air at a 90 degree angle.
2. Put your hands behind your head and tense your abs.
3. Keeping the same 90 degree bend in your knees, lower your feet so they touch the ground. Then, go the other direction and bring your knee up towards your chest. Repeat this 10-15 times.
With this exercise, you want to go slow throughout the whole range of motion. If you go too fast, you will not keep the same amount of tension on your lower abs. Be sure to exhale as you bring your knees close to your chest.
Plank (this one is a killer!!!!)
1. Lie face down on mat resting on the forearms, palms flat on the floor.
2. Push off the floor, raising up onto toes and resting on the elbows.
3. Keep your back flat, in a straight line from head to heels.
4. Tilt your pelvis and contract your abdominals to prevent your rear end from sticking up in the air or sagging in the middle.
Hold for 20 to 60 seconds, lower and repeat for 3-5 reps.
5. If you feel like adding intensity, while doing the plank alternate pulling your legs into your chest and breathing out as you pull the leg in.
So in conclusion, you have learned that in order to lose body fat you need to have the right combination of diet, cardio, and strength training. You also learned two exercises that will help you to have a great lower ab workout.
Remember the key to success is to keep learning and stay persistent! =)
What is your trouble zone? Maybe we can share some exercise tips with eachother!

Challenge #1
(Start date: Monday January 17th)
As I was wasting time on the Internet last week during the baby’s nap time and wishing I could be at the gym kicking my own bootie with some zumba, kickboxing, or a body pump class I fell upon this challenge http://www.momsintofitness.com/shed-5-fast-contest and it gave me the idea to invite some of my mommy friends to work together on improving our health.

Who's with me?
Motherhood has so many different difficult seasons:
*Perhaps you have just had your first child, you may be lonely or confused and need tips on how to find someone to talk to just to ease your loneliness and also one to talk to about new questions and fears that you seem to be stumbling upon on a daily basis.
*Or maybe you are the mother of two who needs tips on how to keep your toddler from killing your newborn! You may be a mother of a teenager and you aren't sure how to react to their new found desire of independence or what to do when they came home with a new piercing (maybe one of those nose or tongue ones?).
*Or maybe you just want a support group to help drive you to lose some of that weight you blamed on the baby, but really you were the one eating the late night bowls of ice cream and didn't mind taking thirds of that baby shower cake.
Whatever struggles you are having, this blog is for you. Sporadically I will give challenges that we can all support and comment on together. The goal is to work as a team of mothers to become healthier, more balanced moms.
My first challenge will start on January 24th and go for 4 weeks. It is a physical challenge, so if you've been slacking a bit in the exercise department and want other supporters to help you on your way to a trimmer, happier, healthier mommy, then this one is for you!!!! I'll post the details this weekend, so stay tuned!
